Dr. Chen Yikui's Philosophical View of Storytelling

(Shared by Mr.Chen Guotai)

Some students complained, "Dr. Chen Yikui is telling stories in class, wasting time." These students may be too obsessed with the duck-filling education, too serious and too ignorant of the art of listening to stories. Can't hear the philosophy behind the teacher's story. Those people are like seeing the cliffs, but not seeing the precious orchid, nor smelling the refreshing fragrance.

The famous Chinese novels "A Dream of Red Mansions", "Water Margin", and "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", all have deep philosophies behind them, and they are all "stories" that people will never tire of reading. There are different levels of enlightenment for different age groups. Every time I read it, I have a different experience. Teacher Chen is a master of samādhi. Teacher Chen wants everyone to listen to the story in a relaxed and enjoyable mood and happily brings his wisdom home to help you relieve the tension and pressure of work during the week. He has always wanted to get rid of school-cramming education.

Perhaps some people are too obsessed with "teaching classes," and they always think that after paying the fee, they must recover the equivalent knowledge. In fact, while paying the fees, Mr. Chen has already given out valuable gifts to his classmates.

What's more, the value of knowledge is not in "quantity" but in "quality". The value of a small, high-purity diamond often exceeds a lot of gold. A famous orchid is sometimes better than a garden full of roses. Everyone knows the truth, and it depends on how you choose.

Teacher Chen told a story about "Lei Gong specializes in hitting good people". Behind it is an ignorant sorrow? Or Taiwanese are so stupid that they should rest after thunderstorms in rainy days, so why go out and have a thunderstorms? Or should the government do a good job advocating it? Or is it a reflection of scientific knowledge? Or is it to get rid of the superstition of folk customs, "Thunder Pa and Thunder Ma don't have eyes when they are fighting, they specialize in hitting good people"? Or...; Finally, Mr. Chen’s kindness and compassion suggested that grandmother and mother call the long-term workers at home, and not go out to work in the event of a thunderstorm in order to avoid misfortune.

Knowledge is easy to be "telled to death," and "story" is "alive". Everyone can have different imaginations, interpret and play their own roles. A wise man who can tell stories is a wise man, and knowing how to listen to stories is a wise man and a bosom friend.
